About the baker

Hi, I’m Mia!

I grew up in Alameda in a family that loved to cook and bake - for us, food and shared meals were our way to express love and connection.

Though I found myself working in tech as an adult, hosting dinner parties and sharing baked goods with friends was my favorite part of any week. Eventually I decided to attend SF Cooking School to explore my passion in a real way. It was one of the best years of my life, and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I moved back to Alameda with my family in the fall of 2021 and started hosting pop-up baking events in my neighborhood. I absolutely loved it, and the experience spurred me to take a leap of faith. With the incredible support of my family, I decided to open Misette and pursue baking full time.

Working in food in some capacity has long been a dream of mine, albeit a fuzzy one and something that seemed precariously far off in the future. I knew what it would feel like, but not what it would look like exactly. Now that Misette is here, that dream has started to really take shape. I am so excited to contribute to the beautiful community where I grew up, one treat at a time.

What does Misette mean?

The name Misette was inspired by the French cooking term, mise en place, which means “everything in it’s place“. Mise is just an abbreviated way to refer to mise en place, and is a term I heard constantly during cooking school.

With the addition of “ette” at the end of the name, the rough translation of Misette is “everything in it’s little place”. It is a nod to France, the lessons instilled during cooking school, and the teeny tiny business (and baking room!) that these baked goods are coming from.
